Matsubayashi-Ryu : Okinawan Karate for the Body, Mind & Spirit

Who is Kodokan-Wilson Karate Dojo?

Kodokan-Wilson Karate is a traditional karate school teaching the Okinawan style of Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate to provide a fun and exciting way of building confidence, conditioning the body and inspiring spiritual growth. We will teach techniques and concepts that will allow the student to feel more confident in their ability to protect themselves if forced to do so while maintaining a Christian attitude.

My teacher once told me "Do what you have to do to survive but do it with love in your heart", it took me a while to fully understand but what he meant was that I may have to hurt another human or animal for that matter, but I should not enjoy it or look forward to it, I should love my enemy as my brother and only do what is necessary to survive the dangerous situation. This idea is what we will strive to instill in all of our students.

In association with and under the direction of the WMKA - World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Association located in Naha, Okinawa, Kodokan-Wilson Karate will teach the art of Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do in Pekin, Illinois and in conjunction with Kodokan-Seiler Karate located in Carrollton, Texas (near Dallas); Houston, Texas; Lakeville, Minnesota.

Kodokan-Wilson Karate Mission

"To be the premier Karate training center delivering physical, mental and spiritual growth through karate training while supporting education, well being and family values".

Matsubayashi-Ryu - is a branch form of Shorin-Ryu developed in the Naha Region of Okinawa. This form of karate is characterized by fast movements and highly mobile stances. Matsubayashi-Ryu is an Okinawan martial art born from man's instinct for self-preservation and cultivated by generations of gifted masters who served to improve and pass on effective and useful techniques.

Developing as a method of survival from the early banning of weapons and martial arts training by a conquering entity, the Okinawans practiced techniques in the dark of night hidden away. Matsubayashi-Ryu is a style predicated on survival and lends its study for self defense and not sport competition.

Matsubayashi-Ryu was founded in 1947 by Shoshin Nagamine and based on the karate-do taught to him by Ankichi Arakaki(1899 - 1927), Choki Motobu (1871-1944), and Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945).

This includes the physical elements of Striking (Atemi), joint locks and manipulations(Tuite), and Body shifting(Tai Sabaki) as well as the non-physical elements of meditation and mind calming techniques (Zazen).

The World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-do Association (WMKA) is currently under the leadership and guidance of Yoshitaka Taira, Hanshi, 10th Dan after the passing of Soke Takayoshi Nagamine April 27, 2012, son of WMKA founder O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine.
